Tourism contributes significantly to global carbon emissions, especially air travel. The aviation industry alone is responsible for about 2% of all global CO2 emissions. When considering the broader impact of the entire tourism sector, including hotels, local transport, and attractions, the global carbon footprint due to tourism is estimated to be around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
So, should we stop travelling? Not necessarily. Travel exposes us to new cultures, broadens our understanding of the world, and can even be a force for good, primarily when it supports local economies. However, we can make more sustainable travel choices:
- Reduce Air Travel: Opt for trains or buses for shorter distances.
- Stay Longer: Instead of multiple short trips, take fewer, longer trips.
- Choose Sustainable Accommodations: Look for eco-friendly hotels or accommodations.
- Support Local: Eat local food, shop, and choose local experiences.
- Offset Your Carbon: Invest in carbon offset projects to balance out your travel emissions.
